Indrajit Sabharwal’s Vision for Tech-Driven Business Growth
Indrajit Sabharwal, the chairman and founder of Simmtronics, is the embodiment of the power of vision, grit, and innovation in the tech space. Starting from scratch, he has made Simmtronics a world leader in semiconductors, AI, and digital products, redefining India's place in the global technology map.
Early Life and Entrepreneurial Beginnings
Born with a natural interest in technology, Indrajit Sabharwal graduated with an engineering degree from Pune University. He started his professional career at ICL UK (currently Fujitsu ICIM) in Pune with a humble salary of Rs 1,500 per month. While working there, he did three part-time management degrees, marrying technical skills with business knowledge—a combination that would characterize his entrepreneurial career.
In 1989, with Rs 10,000, Indrajit Sabharwal established SI Consultants, an IT solutions firm. The company acquired high-profile clients such as Modi Lufthansa, Xerox, HP Digital, and Sahara Airlines within eight months, raking in Rs 30 lakh in revenue. This success served as the starting point for his second venture.
Establishing Simmtronics: Leading Tech Manufacturing in India
Indrajit Sabhawal started Simmtronics in 1990 with a focus on memory modules and DRAM technology. He realized the non-existence of a semiconductor manufacturing infrastructure in India and took the very bold initiative of creating indigenous assembly lines, thereby transforming Simmtronics into a first-mover in India's semiconductor market. Simmtronics supplied to top international brands such as HCL, LG, IBM, Compaq, and Dell.
By 2000, Simmtronics had opened its first manufacturing facility in Bhiwadi, Rajasthan, and a second one in Roorkee in 2005. The company's product offerings were diversified to include motherboards, graphics cards (for NVIDIA), color monitors, and semiconductor DRAM modules, and it made strategic partnerships with Intel, AMD, NVIDIA, Samsung, VIA, and SK Hynix. Internationalization was next, with factories in Singapore (2005) and Dubai (2006) .
Breakthrough Innovations: Affordable Computing and Tablets
In 2010, Simmtronics co-branded laptops with IBM and Ubuntu and sold them worldwide for only $190—making the world's cheapest laptop at that time. The most notable achievement of the company was in 2012 when it launched the XPAD Mini tablets. The tablets were the No.1 selling tablets in Dubai, beating Apple, and made Simmtronics the third-largest tablet manufacturer in the world between 2012 and 2014.
Adopting AI and Integrated Manufacturing
Under Indrajit Sabharwal's direction, Simmtronics adopted integrated manufacturing across semiconductors, smartphones, tablets, laptops, graphics cards, and AI-based infrastructure. The firm entered AI-based data centers, high-end computing solutions, and next-generation semiconductor technologies, cementing its place as a world tech leader.
